Bee Propolis Info –
Propolis is a natural resinous substance made by honey bees in the process of collecting plants and bark resins for use within the beehive. It is said to stimulate function of a healthy immune system and protect against certain adverse health conditions. Propolis is one of natures most versatile substances with a wide range of reported health benefits, both when ingested and used in topical applications such as cuts, mouth sores and ulcers.
Scientific studies into the chemical makeup of propolis have revealed that it is comprised of 16 amino acids and is a plentiful source of bioflavonoids, which have anti-inflammatory properties, while amino acids play an important role in maintaining a healthy immune system.
Propolis has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties and when combined with some prescription antibiotics it may boost the effectiveness of the prescribed drug*. A common use of bee propolis is in topical applications where it is applied to the skin to heal rashes and sores, and taken orally to heal cold and canker sores.
Properties – As with all substances extracted from the beehive, propolis and royal jelly included, there are seasonal and regional variations which affect the precise chemical composition of the substances. This is not a negative, merely a variable which make specifying the actual chemical content difficult. As an average, propolis is roughly 50% resin and vegetable substance, 30% wax, 10% oils, 5% bee pollen and 5% other minerals and compounds.
The above table shows the regional variations of propolis and how they impact benefits through varying chemical composition. Propolis can be used as a topical agent, such as with a propolis ointment, or a vitamin supplement with the active health ingredient usually in capsule form.
