On May 20th we celebrated World Bee Day. In 2017 the United Nations declared May 20 would be celebrated as World Bee Day every year from now on. The country of Slovenia made the official request. They chose May 20 because the pioneer of beekeeping, Anton Janša, was born on that day in 1734.

One of the biggest ways bees benefit the planet and mankind is through pollination. Bees collect pollen to take back to their hives to feed the rest of the colony. While they are collecting the pollen they are also pollinating the plants which helps the plants reproduce and keep producing more seeds. About a third of the world’s food production depends on the bees. Bees pollinate 75% of the crops around the world including things like strawberries, apples, tomatoes, beans, and soft fruits.

England is hosting programs to highlight that 17 species of bees have been lost from Eastern England and that 25 more species are threatened. Campaigners hope to educate the public on steps they can take to protect the bees and help them thrive. There was also an exhibition in London highlighting Bee art and poetry. Some places in Australia celebrated by helping children make beeswax candles and bee hotels. In Italy they held an International Bee Festivals. People could observe bees at work from the safety of being behind glass, take a hike to see some of the bee’s favorite plants, and picnic on food that wouldn’t have been possible with out pollination.

We like to think every day is World Bee Day here at the Natural Shopper. We are constantly researching and studying bee health and the bee products for new customerslatest on what is threatening the bee population. Bees are hugely important to the world at large and are important to us here too.

We strive each and every day to seek out the very best ingredients from the world’s healthiest hives. We know the health benefits of Royal Jelly, Bee Pollen, Propolis, and Honey because that is what we do every day and we want to share that knowledge with our customers.

We hope you do things to help the bees in your area too. Little things like not mowing your grass every week and letting the dandelions and clover grow so bees can feed on them, planting bee friendly flowers and plants in your garden, or even putting out a shallow dish of water with some pebbles in it so the bees have easy access to water.
