Can Bee Propolis Rejuvenate The Immune System?

By Carlson Wade

The immune system, key to protection against infection, aging and cellular destruction, has been shown to become rejuvenated through the use of an all-natural food substance created in beehives called PROPOLIS.

The first double-blind placebo-controlled study of this food, Professor S Scheller, heading a team of four other doctors at the Institute for Microbiology at the Medical Academy in Sabrze-Rokitinca, Poland, found that propolis did have the power to prolong the prime of life. Professor Scheller's research published recently, in part concluded that propolis is able to directly stimulate the immune system to release substances that protect against cellular deterioration … promotes a process of phagocylosis, the destruction of potentially harmful foreign bacteria that is otherwise threatening within the body…stimulated the formation of antibodies to build immunity to many diseases.

Professor Scheller's findings offer hope for extending the prime of life by building resistance to aging and many illnesses through the use of propolis to strengthen the cellular defenses.

Basically phagocytes (white blood cells) serve as the body's primary defense mechanism against bacterial infections. You need an abundance of healthy phagocytes because they engulf harmful bacteria and secrete a variety of substances that digest the invading microbe once it is engulfed. These same phagocytes are responsible for influencing the production of antibodies which will "knock out" harmful bacteria. Professor Scheller found that propolis initiates the activity and cleansing action of these life-saving white blood cells.

Just how important is your immune system? It helps protect you against diseases and infections. But, as you reach your thirties the immune system becomes a bit weaker. If you let it grow weaker in the succeeding years, you become susceptible to many illnesses.

Basically the immune system consists of a series of humeral and cellular factors that perform various activities. Where there is a weakening of different immune mechanisms, it is necessary to have a natural supplement that offers the widest possible spectrum of nutritional activity. Such a supplement must have an unusual range of flavonoids or cell-building compounds.

It is propolis that seems to fit this bill. Propolis not only contains a complex of vitamins, minerals and enzymes, but also a unique range of flavonoids in their original and natural combination.

It is believed that the flavonoids contained in propolis block the release of histamine by means of cell membrane lipid stabilization. This creates inner immunity against many illnesses. These same ingredients in propolis guard against the deposition of cholesterine crystals, lipofuscins (fatty pigment in the heart muscle, nerves, liver) which could accelerate aging.

BENEFITS OF IMMUNE-BUILDING PROPOLIS

The team of doctors conducted various laboratory, physical and psychological tests to come up with their conclusions about the broad influence of this daily supplement. Their findings suggest that people can enjoy good physical and mental health with this daily supplement. Professor Scheller released these findings about propolis and its reactions:

"There was an increase in general physical performance; also sexual and, above all intellectual.

"In the gastro-enterological area, we found a favorable effect on infectious changes in the mucous membranes of the stomach and intestines.

"There was an accelerated and intensified regeneration of injured tissue on traumatically or infectiously altered tissues.

"There were no unequivocally negative changes in the white blood picture or in the liver or kidney values. Among other things, this substantiates the absence of side effects of propolis as well as its non-toxicity.

"In our paper, we particularly studied the effect on the immune system and documented further positive effects of propolis on circulation, metabolism, physical well-being and infectious diseases."

WHAT IS PROPOLIS?

When bees started to gather in hives some 80 million years ago, they had a problem; the same problem that no doctor likes to face. How do you avoid bacterial infection when 50,000 bodies are crawling over one another night and day?

Nature provided the ideal answer for the bees. Certain trees, such as poplar, willow, horse chestnut and birch, exude a sap which has antibiotic qualities to protect that tree from infection. Bees gather this sap, remetabolized it with their own nectar secretions, and took it back to the hive. They put this substance all over the hive so every bee could 'brush' against it and become 'immunized'.

Many scientists believe a hive to be more sterile and free from bacteria than a modern hospital. The tree antibiotic became a bee antibiotic and was hence named 'propolis' by the ancient Greeks. Translated, propolis means 'before the city', or 'a defense'.

For centuries, propolis remained part of folk medicine, mainly in Europe and Russia.

Some 20 years ago it was 'rediscovered' by a Danish scientist, K. Lung Aagaard and a French doctor, Remy Chauvin. They worked specifically to standardize the quality of this natural product. Today hospitals, clinics and universities in many parts of Europe, are testing propolis for the treatment of many illnesses and conditions of immunity. One report alone, just translated by two American doctors, reveals the successful use of propolis in Russia in more than 70 different studies during the past 17 years.Currently, propolis has proven effective in helping to build immunity and resistance to such conditions as infections, ulcers, colds, stress, periodontal problems, pharyngitis and aging, itself.

The most recent report is that propolis is being considered by the World Health Organization as part of its nutritional and health program. Thus far, nearly all research on propolis has taken place in Europe. To help protect against the 'aging clock' and the interference with your genetic blueprint, it is necessary to rebuild and strengthen your immune system. How to seize a genetic hold of your cells and tissues? The answer may well be in propolis, the all-natural product that has been shown to strengthen the body's molecules and guard against illness.

"Stimulate the immune system," says Professor S. Scheller, "and it is possible to control the aging process and enjoy a long and healthy life. Propolis holds the key to this form of inner rejuvenation."
